Presidents Message
April 14 -15 were days that made me proud (again) to be a part of WMBA. Our conference at the Hyatt Regency Milwaukee was a great success. We thank the many people who had a hand in that success and we especially want to thank our many sponsors and exhibitors who supported our efforts to deliver a quality event to almost 250 members. Initial survey results have been very positive with some good suggestions for next years event. Special thanks again to Conference Committee Chair Kim Schauer and the entire committee for coordinating a very classy conference. I also want to thank our tremendous association management staff for navigating all the moving parts involved in these types of events. Lastly, I want to thank all of you who attended both on Thursday night and all day Friday. It's always great to share ideas and network with industry professionals like you.

Monday, April 25th was an important day for WMBA!! I was joined by our Secretary and Legislative Co-Chair Jan Brezina and Legislative Committee member and WRA Laison Ken Dickson to witness the ceremonial signing of Wisconsin Act 376 in Governor Walker's Capitol Office. Special thanks to our Legislative Committee, WMBA Leadership and our Government Affairs Lobbyist George Klaetsch for all of their efforts. Please see the Legislative Update in this newsletter for more details.

On Thursday, June 16th, we will transition our WMBA Leadership Team at the Annual Installation Breakfast. This event will be held at the Milwaukee Marriott West in Waukesha ( convenient location from I 94 ). We have invited the new Wisconsin DFI Secretary Lon Roberts to address our members and install our Officers and Directors. We look forward to seeing you at this important event.

As usual, our Chapters have been busy planning new events. Take a minute to review these opportunities for education, fun and networking..........from panel discussions to golf outings, our Chapters provide valuable programs for our members. Register today.....you won't be disappointed.

One last thought........In Governor Walker's talk with members at our conference, he underscored the importance of what we do on a daily basis. We all participate in assisting our customers to realize their dream of home ownership. No matter what role you play in your organization, you can take great pride in knowing that what you do every day makes a difference in someone's life. Politics aside, in a private moment with the Governor, he wanted to make sure that our members knew he had a deep appreciation for the work we do. I told him that his presence at our conference was a clear indication of that appreciation.

Enjoy these beautiful Spring days....I wish you all happiness and success in business and life.

Legislative Update - George Klaetsch

WMBA Members  Attend Assembly Bill 720 Bill Signing

On April 25 the WMBA’s eight month legislative journey came to an exciting and rewarding conclusion, as WMBA President, John Inzeo, Secretary, Jan Brezina and Legislative Committee member, Ken Dickson joined Governor Walker, State Representative Terry Katsma and other industry stakeholders to participate in a ceremonial bill signing of the mortgage foreclosure reform legislation.  As most of the readers know, Wisconsin Act 376 is the culmination of many WMBA members hard work and grassroots efforts to draft, introduce and pass the legislation in 2015 -16.

Heartfelt thanks to WMBA leadership and Legislative Committee members for their hard work and engagement on this critical policy issue for the WMBA.  As a result, Wisconsin Act 376 would ensure the following benefits to both lenders and borrowers:
  • Redemption periods are shortened
  • Borrowers are incentivized to negotiate with lenders and avoid abandonment
  • “Zombie properties” are addressed more promptly

The bill signing capped off another successful legislative year for the WMBA as the association transitions into the election season.

42nd Annual WMBA Real Estate Finance Conference

Conference Exhibitors
Nearly 250 mortgage industry professionals attended the 42nd Annual WMBA Real Estate Finance Conference earlier this month at the Hyatt Regency Milwaukee. Thursday evening kicked off the event with dinner, networking and brewery tours at Lakefront Brewery. Attendees closed the evening with a beautiful view of the city from VUE, at the top of the Hyatt. Conference guest speaker Jerry Kramer stopped in for autographs and photos, too! See all the
conference photos online.

Friday was full of education and networking. Twenty-six exhibitors were on hand to provide information on their products and services. Bill Emerson, Quicken Loans CEO and MBA chair, joined the group for a virtual presentation from the Quicken Loan headquarters in Detroit on his perspective from MBA. Governor Walker addressed the group prior to the morning exhibit hall break. MBA chief economist Michael Fratantoni presented a Mortgage/Housing Outlook and answered questions from the audience. Green Bay Packer Legend Jerry Kramer’s keynote kicked off the afternoon leading up to the close of the silent auction. Kramer also held another autograph and photo session. Fannie Mae VP of Applied Economic and Housing Research Dr. Mark Palim closed the day with a very educational session on the Demographics and the Future of US Housing Demand.

The silent auction raised nearly $3,000 for the WMBA Education Fund. Thanks to everyone who donated and bid on the items. Thank you to the committee for their great work and execution of a successful conference!

Watch for future information on the dates and location of next year’s conference!

MBA Update

Take Action Today to Support Transitional Licensing for MLOs

Over the past few months, 1,391 MAA members have written letters to 330 Congressional offices in support of H.R. 2121, a bill that would provide transitional licensing authority to originate mortgages for individuals who move from a federally-insured institution to a non-bank lender or from one state to another while they work to meet the SAFE Act's licensing and testing requirements. Thank you to those MAA members who have already contacted their elected officials regarding H.R. 2121.

H.R. 2121 is an important bill for the mortgage industry. Transitional authority would be available to MLOs who have been registered for at least 12 months and have a clean history as an originator (e.g., no license denials, revocations or suspensions, no cease and desist orders, and no felonies that preclude licensing).

The language of the bill has been endorsed by MBA after consultation with the Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS) and would be a narrow and simple solution to allow individuals to continue working and underwriting loans, while in no way weakening the important consumer protections of the SAFE Act.

H.R. 2121 has been cosponsored by a bipartisan group of 45 Members of Congress and was approved unanimously by the House Financial Services Committee. Growing support is VITAL to ensuring it is considered by the full House. Please write your member TODAY and urge them to cosponsor this important piece of legislation. Send a letter to your Member of Congress and make your voice heard on this important issue.

Best regards,

Bill Killmer
